Things to do in Fira

Fira is Santorini's capital and its default base: the caldera-rim town where the old port cable car, the airport road, and most bus routes converge.

It sits about 6 km from JTR airport and is walkable end to end in 20 minutes, though the pedestrian lanes get packed from 10am to 5pm when cruise tenders unload at the old port below. The Museum of Prehistoric Thera holds the frescoes excavated from Akrotiri and is a solid rainy-day stop, entry around 6 EUR.

Fira works best as a hub for restaurants, shops, ATMs, and onward transport, not as a quiet retreat; Firostefani and Imerovigli, a 15 to 20 minute walk north along the rim, are calmer choices for sleeping.
