Things to do in Akrotiri
Akrotiri is a Minoan town buried by the Bronze Age eruption of around 1600 BC and excavated since 1967, now covered by a bioclimatic roof that keeps the site open in wind or rain. Entry runs around 20 EUR in high season, with a lower rate off-season.
No human remains have ever been found here: the layout of tools and furniture suggests residents had time to leave before the ash fell. This is a different place and a different era from Ancient Thira, the Dorian city on the Mesa Vouno ridge, and from the separate Akrotiri lighthouse a short drive further south.
Plan on an hour or so walking the raised platforms above the excavated streets and houses.
