Things to do in Santorini

Santorini is the island's popular name; its official name is Thira, and the local council is the Dimos of Thira. The name Santorini comes from Venetian sailors, after Saint Irene.

What you see from a boat or a plane is one archipelago: Thira itself in its crescent shape, Thirassia across the water, the black islets of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni in the middle, and uninhabited Aspronisi to the southwest. Together they ring a caldera roughly 12 by 7 kilometres, formed by the Late Bronze Age eruption around 1600 BCE.

Ferries reach the island only at Athinios, on the west coast, about 6 km from the airport (JTR) at Kamari. This page is a starting point before you pick a village, a beach, or a boat trip.
